Ny gæste-ph.d. Zachary Hertz

Hello all! My name is Zachary Lorico Hertz and I am lucky to be visiting Aarhus for the months of May and June. Currently, I am a Ph.D. student studying political science at UC Berkeley. I am also the Programmer and Data Manager at the Berkeley IGS Poll. I received my MA with a concentration in Quantitative Methods and Social Analysis from the University of Chicago in 2022, and previously earned my BA from Tufts University in 2019.
I am broadly interested in the effects a diversifying population has had on American subnational institutions, public opinion, voter behavior, and public policy. At Aarhus I will be working on a few projects: studying whether ending at-large city council elections encouraged racial minorities to run for office, how hate crimes against Asian Americans have increased group cohesion and political mobilization, and how local diversity has driven political engagement.
In addition to my academic research, I have done independent political consulting for Groundwork Project, Data for Progress, and independent clients. I previously worked as a political pollster at a Democratic-aligned think tank. While much of my time is devoted to reading, writing, or coding, I enjoy hiking, quiz bowl, and both performing and producing music in my spare time. Send me an email and let’s talk more!
