Hi everyone!

My name is Alex and I’m a new Assistant Professor in the Department (in the Comparative Politics section). I spent the past year as a postdoc at Oxford, and before that completed my PhD at the London School of Economics. I’m originally from the UK, but am very excited to get to know Denmark!

In my research, I study the political consequences of technological change in low-income countries. I’m currently working on a project exploring how digitalisation changes how governments learn about citizens, and how this reshapes the conventional paths through which state capacity develops. In my PhD I conducted fieldwork in Ghana and Malawi, including organising several surveys and experiments, and I plan to return to both countries over the next few years. I’m also interested in broader questions about accountability and political behaviour, including work on protests, natural disasters, and foreign aid cuts across Africa.

Outside work, I enjoy running, cooking, and practising my (rusty) piano skills. I already signed up for Aarhus half marathon next year, so am keen to learn about the best routes in the city to train. I also like watching football, and am hoping that my beloved Arsenal can reclaim their league title this season - if you know any good spots in town to watch games, do let me know!
