International relations in a (post-American) new Middle East - great powers and regional actors

Great powers have a long history in the Middle East, which famously has been described as the ‘most penetrated regional system in the world.’ At the same time, it is also recognized that Middle East international relations cannot be reduced to being a theatre for great power rivalries as it has its own logics with regional non/state actors pursuing their own interests. This has resulted in a ‘multiplex’ form of regional politics, and the (perception of) US ‘pivoting to Asia’ has in recent years raised the question about what international relations in a (post-American) new Middle East will look like.

Against this background, Waleed Hazbun (University of Alabama) and James Worrall (University of Leeds) will share their thoughts on the role of great powers and regional actors in past and present international relations in the Middle East. Following their presentations, the floor will be open for questions.
