My name is Maiken Gelardi Madsen and I am new PhD-student in the department. For my PhD project, supervised by Morten Valbjørn and co-supervised by Jørgen Dige-Pedersen, I will explore how to make IR a more global discipline by incorporating knowledge from Area Studies. More specifically, I investigate how well theories developed in Latin America travel to other non-Western regions in order to explore if these regional theories could be of more universal value.

I have been fortunate to work and study in Latin America for a couple of years and I am excited to contribute to a larger focus on the developments and events in this part of the world.

I graduated from this department in 2015 and during my time here, I worked as both a student assistant and a teaching assistant in the IR section. After a stint working as a consultant with labour market politics, I am glad to be back and I look forward to participate in the ongoing activities of the department – both academically and socially.
